Corrine Brown Announces Candidacy for Congress in FL-10

Longtime U.S. Rep. Pledges to Fight for the Overlooked and UnderpaidTallahassee, Florida – Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown returned to the Capital today and promptly announced that she had filed her petition papers marking her official declaration of candidacy for the 10th Congressional District of Florida. The 10th District is currently an open seat as incumbent U.S. Rep. Val Demings is running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Republican Marco Rubio. Brown recently agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice. In the joint agreement, the Government dropped all but one charge against Brown, and she pled to one tax count. This agreement ended all litigation between Brown and the Justice Department. “I’ve represented most of the people of the new 10th District during my 24 years in Congress and I always earned huge support in this region,” Brown said. “Now I see our hard-won gains are being taken away from us. Minorities have lost opportunities to elect candidates of their choice because of the recent gerrymandering in the State of Florida. Over the past two decades, we’ve gone backward on guns – and more of our children are dying. We’ve gone backward on voting rights – and more of our people are disenfranchised. And we’re going backward on a woman’s right to choose – and more women are going to be harmed. We’ve got to turn this country around, move forward instead of backward. That’s what this campaign is all about.” Brown added that her experience has shown her firsthand the inequality of the American judicial system. “There are far too many innocent people wrongly imprisoned,” Brown said. “Too many people whose lives have been ruined because of a racially biased and broken judicial system. And there are too many people who are being overlooked and underpaid by both the State of Florida and the federal government. If nobody else is going to stand up to right these wrongs and fight for those who are being denied their God-given rights to freedom, justice, and the ability to participate in our democratic system, I will!” From 1993 until 2017, Brown represented the 3rd Congressional District of Florida. During those years, the 3rd District included much of what now comprises the new 10th District. Among her many accomplishments, she secured nearly $1 billion to create the SunRail, Central Florida’s commuter rail service; more than $2 billion for expansion and improvements at the airports in Orlando, Jacksonville, and Gainesville; $500 million to build and improve VA hospital and medical facilities in Orlando, Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tampa; and nearly $90 million to expand the George C. Young Federal Annex Courthouse in Orlando. “I helped the people of Orlando when the Pulse shooting happened. I helped when the hurricanes hit. I worked with the community by coordinating relief aid after an earthquake devastated Haiti.

And I led the fight when Trayvon Martin was viciously gunned down. I carry the people of Orlando in my heart wherever I go.
